The hematite has a long and enigmatic history, and over the ages has carried with it many beliefs that it has healing powers. Some get it for these believed healing benefits, some for aesthetics, some for both. Black and almost metallic looking in whole form and blood red when crushed, this intriguing stone is once again piquing the curiousity of on-lookers browsing jewelry shops.

I've found beautiful carved hematite necklaces and rings in jewelry shops for as little as 25 cents, and seen detailed hematite carvings embedded in gold and silver with much pricier tags. Either way the stone stood out as an object of intrigue and beauty.

Many believe when you scratch the surface, there's even more than red streaks revealed, many believe it has certain effects on the human body. Crystal healers believe it brings peace of mind and calms anxiety, among other things. Mineral healers recommend it for use in treating the stress of jet lag, birth, surgery, tumors, insomnia, leg cramps, nervous disorders and fevers.

Native Americans used it as a remedy for dental problems, pimples, canker sores and alcohol abuse. It has been found in many Native American tombs as well as in ancient Egyptian and Babylonian graves. The ancients also used it to stop the bleeding of wounds and to relieve eye problems.

Healing or not, the stone is experiencing a revival and is now featured in many fine jewelry stores, have a look around at our carefully selected stores for a wide variety of jewelry, including hematite jewelry.
